Canadian Tire Jumpstart supports Sport for Life for All Newcomers to Canada resource

The Sport for Life Society is pleased to announce the launch of the Sport for Life for All Newcomers to Canada resource, through support from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. By 2030, immigration will account for all of Canada’s net population growth and cities across Canada are being transformed by immigration. Newcomers to Canada come with a unique inventory of sport and movement skills and, like all Canadians, require an individualized approach to enhance their own level of physical literacy through quality, stage-appropriate experiences. The Sport for Life for All Newcomers to Canada resource is a guide developed for organizations, highlighting possible solutions to barriers and opportunities to support newcomers in sport and physical activity.

“Sport for Life is thrilled to partner with Jumpstart to support newcomers,” says Richard Way, CEO of Sport for Life. “Newcomers deserve to be welcomed to Canada and to develop a social network through sport that will allow them to integrate into their new home. This resource is a toolkit for organizations to assist them in fostering a more inclusive sport and physical activity system in Canada.” Sport for Life‘s purpose is to improve the quality of sport and develop physical literacy for all.  Since 2004, Sport for Life has published 68 resources that are available on www.sportforlife.ca/resources.

Jumpstart is a national charity dedicated to helping kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation. Jumpstart believes that organized sports connect kids to their communities. “Over the past two years, Jumpstart has supported almost 15,000 newcomer youth in sport and physicial activity programming through over $1.1 million in grants. Jumpstart believes that all kids, regardless of their financial situation or physical abilities, should have the chance to play. We are proud to partner with Sport for Life on this new resource in an effort to create more opportunities where all kids can be included which leads to social integration in their new communities,” says Marco Di Buono, Associate Vice President of Operations and Programs at Jumpstart. Since 2005, Jumpstart has helped 1.6 million kids and counting get in the game.

The resource empowers organizations to better support newcomers in sport and physical activity.
