Sport for Life Partners with Acadia University and Cambrian College in Free Initiative to Advance Physical Literacy Education

Sport for Life is thrilled to announce new partnerships with Acadia University’s School of Kinesiology and Cambrian College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program, marking an important milestone in advancing physical literacy education. These collaborations represent a unique opportunity to enhance student training, provide valuable tools for future employment, and empower communities by developing well-rounded leaders in physical literacy.

Bridging Expertise in Physical Literacy

By partnering with these respected institutions, Sport for Life brings its comprehensive certifications in physical literacy education into the academic environment. These partnerships come at no cost to post-secondary institutions, providing them with free workshop content and resources that faculty can deliver to students as part of their courses. Students at Acadia University and Cambrian College benefit from these specialized workshops that enrich their learning experience and prepare them for leadership roles in their careers.

For students who wish to pursue official Sport for Life certification, additional components are required. Each certification includes two eLearning courses, two workshops, and two quizzes. Since students already receive the workshops as part of their curriculum, they only need to complete the eLearning courses and quizzes through Sport for Life’s Campus at a discounted rate.

Examples of workshops available include:

These certifications provide students with a strong foundation in physical literacy equipping them with the knowledge and tools to create inclusive, high-quality sport and physical activity experiences.

Thalia Moore, Senior Manager of Knowledge Scaling at Sport for Life, stated, “Our partnerships with Acadia University and Cambrian College mark significant steps forward in physical literacy education. By providing students at both institutions with our comprehensive curriculum, we’re investing in the future of active, inclusive communities across Canada.”

Quality Sport Leader Certification

Sport for Life also offers a Quality Sport Leader certification, a comprehensive education program focused on creating exceptional sport experiences in communities. This certification is designed to develop and support good people, good places, and good programs. Sport leaders (locally, provincially/territorially, and nationally), recreation leaders, and sport funders can build and offer exceptional sport experiences in their communities through this certification. It equips them with the tools to design developmentally appropriate activities that promote fun, inclusivity, and skill development.

Examples of workshops available include:

Together with physical literacy certification, this comprehensive approach to sport and physical activity equips graduates with a complete toolkit for creating positive change in their communities.

Building Career Pathways and Community Impact

Graduates with both their degree/diploma and Sport for Life Physical Literacy Leader certification will be uniquely positioned for diverse roles across education, sport and recreation. The additional training equips them with sought-after skills like inclusive program design, evidence-based leadership techniques, and standardized physical literacy observation. For instance, a graduate could create an inclusive after-school program that boosts fundamental movement skills and confidence in children of all abilities, directly contributing to a more active and healthier community.

Projected Impact on Canadian Sports and Recreation

This partnership is expected to influence the Canadian sports and recreation sector by educating future professionals in the latest physical literacy and quality sport methodologies. Sport for Life’s certifications serve as a standardized credential that complements the advanced education provided by post-secondary institutions, offering a consistent, comprehensive approach to training future physical literacy and quality sport leaders. The collaboration aims to:

  • Improve the quality and consistency of physical literacy and quality sport programs nationwide
  • Increase inclusivity in sports and recreation activities
  • Boost participation rates in physical activities among Canadians of all ages
  • Contribute to improved long-term health outcomes for communities
Expansion Plans and Call for Collaboration

While the partnership with Acadia University and Cambrian College marks a significant first step, Sport for Life is eager to expand this initiative. Sport for Life is extending an open invitation to other universities and colleges to join this movement in advancing physical literacy and quality sport education.

“Our collaborations with Acadia University and Cambrian College are just the beginning,” said Thalia Moore. “We’re excited to partner with more institutions to broaden the reach and impact of our physical literacy and quality sport curriculum.”

“We’re very excited about the potential of our new partnership with Sport for Life,” explained Lynn Kabaroff, Program Coordinator of the Fitness and Health Promotion (FPRO) program at Cambrian College. “We believe this collaboration will enrich our curriculum, benefit our students, and support our community. We encourage other institutions to explore how Sport for Life’s resources could complement their programs.”

“One of the benefits of this partnership is that students can take the theoretical aspects from the workshops and put them into practice in our course-based labs,” noted Justin Oliver, Instructor, School of Kinesiology, Acadia University. “Students have commented that they learn the information better when they come to their lab and physically engage with the content.”
