Sport for Life Expands Post-secondary Partnership Program with Memorial University

Sport for Life is pleased to announce a new partnership with Memorial University of Newfoundland’s (MUN) School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, expanding its “Post-secondary Partnership Program” across Canada. This collaboration builds on successful existing partnerships with Acadia University’s School of Kinesiology, Cambrian College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program, Collège Boréal d’arts appliqués et de technologie, and Algonquin College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program—reinforcing Sport for Life’s commitment to integrating physical literacy education into post-secondary curricula.

Bringing Physical Literacy into the Classroom

Through this partnership, MUN students will have access to Sport for Life’s comprehensive Physical Literacy Leader certification curriculum at no cost to the institution. Faculty will deliver specialized workshops directly within courses, providing students with practical, evidence-based tools for creating inclusive sport and physical activity experiences.

Students interested in pursuing official Sport for Life certification will have a streamlined pathway. Rather than completing workshops independently, they only need to complete the eLearning courses and quizzes through Sport for Life’s Campus at a discounted rate—maximizing efficiency and value for learners.

Workshop topics integrated into the program include:

Career Pathways and Community Impact

Graduates with both their degree or diploma and Sport for Life Physical Literacy Leader certification will be uniquely positioned for diverse roles across education, sport, and recreation. The certification equips them with sought-after skills including inclusive program design, evidence-based leadership techniques, and standardized physical literacy observation. These competencies prepare them to design developmentally appropriate activities, create welcoming spaces for participants of all abilities, and contribute to healthier, more active communities.

“We’re excited to welcome Memorial University of Newfoundland to our network of educational partners,” said Thalia Moore, Senior Manager of Knowledge Scaling at Sport for Life. “This collaboration expands our impact, creating more opportunities for students to develop essential skills in physical literacy education and supports our mission to build stronger communities across Canada.”

Institutional Support and Vision

MUN shares this vision for preparing future leaders in physical literacy. “We’ve recently been having conversations in our faculty around incorporating more micro-credentials for students to increase that value-added piece to their education. Understandably, there are some reservations and concerns around budget and instructor capacity to do this in our courses, but Sport for Life is an amazing example of a mutually beneficial partnership that is feasible, free, and a great value-added piece for our students that is already happening on campus!” noted Stephanie Field, Assistant Professor at Memorial University School of Human Kinetics and Recreation.

Advancing the Movement

Sport for Life continues to expand this initiative across the country. Post-secondary institutions interested in offering Sport for Life certification to their students are invited to explore similar partnerships. By working with Sport for Life, schools can enhance their programs, give students valuable credentials that complement their degrees and diplomas, and prepare graduates to lead positive change in their communities.
