Minister Kirsty Duncan’s Announcement Advances Quality Sport
The Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities, is committed to removing harassment, abuse, and discrimination from the Canadian sport system. In her recent announcement, Minister Duncan outlined stronger measures to ensure all Canadians have the opportunity to participate in a sport environment free from harassment, abuse, or discrimination, regardless of an individual’s gender, race, religion, language, age, and ability.
At its essence, quality sport and physical activity is achieved when the right people do the right things at the right times, which leads to positive experiences for participants. Minister Duncan’s measures will go a long way toward ensuring quality sport is delivered by every national sport organization across this country. These measures speak to several topics within the Sport for Life Quality Sport Checklist for Communities and Clubs.
As well, Minister Duncan has established the Federal-Provincial/Territorial Working Group on Safety, Integrity and Ethics in Sport, and the Working Group on Gender Equity in Sport, which will aim to address and find solutions for the issue of harassment, abuse, and discrimination in sport.
“We want all athletes of all abilities and backgrounds to have access to quality sport experiences in which they feel included, welcome, and safe,” says Richard Way, Sport for Life CEO. “We commend Minister Duncan’s decisive action around the issue of harassment, abuse, and discrimination in sport, and look forward to the positive changes this will bring to our sport system.”
