Effective Board Governance: Newly Updated and Re-imagined

Ever sat in a board meeting unsure what you’re actually supposed to be deciding—and what you should leave alone? Ever watched a disagreement between board and executive director spiral because no one was clear on the boundaries?

Most board members get little or no orientation. They’re handed a stack of bylaws, pointed toward a chair, and expected to figure it out. When that happens, meetings drift, decisions stall, and the people doing the hardest volunteer work in the organization burn out first.

Sport for Life’s Effective Board Governance eLearning course has been completely overhauled—new content, new examples, new interactive activities across all eight modules. Developed in collaboration with Brock University’s Centre for Sport Capacity, the update reflects current best practices in not-for-profit governance.

Why Now

Governance expectations have shifted. Boards face more scrutiny around financial accountability, conflict of interest, and the line between oversight and micromanagement. Volunteer turnover means institutional knowledge disappears faster than it used to. And too many organizations learn the hard way what happens when roles aren’t clear: good people leave, bad decisions stick, and rebuilding trust takes years.

Every module was reviewed and modernized to address what boards actually struggle with today.

What You’ll Learn
  • Module 1: Orientation to the Board
  • Module 2: The Structure of Non-profit Boards
  • Module 3: Board Roles and Responsibilities
  • Module 4: Executive Director Roles and Responsibilities
  • Module 5: Strategic Planning
  • Module 6: Policy Development
  • Module 7: Budget and Finances
  • Module 8: Resolving Conflict
What It Looks Like

Each module includes interactive activities. You’ll see the concepts applied to real board situations — disagreements over roles, budget questions, policy decisions — so the learning translates directly to your next meeting.

Who It’s For

The course is designed for volunteers serving on boards of not-for-profit organizations—particularly those with a staff-to-administrator-to-board structure. The core principles are transferable to other models too.

Whether you’re a new board member looking for a solid orientation or a returning member wanting to sharpen your governance knowledge, this course offers a practical foundation.
