Sport for Life Applauds Generational Federal Investment in Canada’s Sport System
May 1, 2026 — Sport for Life applauds the Government of Canada’s $755 million investment in Canada’s sport system, announced through the Spring Economic Update 2026.
This generational investment will strengthen the sport system and expand access to quality sport and physical activity for more Canadians. Sport for Life is encouraged by the emphasis on participation, better alignment of the system, on reaching more children and youth, and on addressing the barriers that limit access to sport across the country.
For over 20 years, Sport for Life has worked alongside partners at every level of the sport system to advance physical literacy and the Long-Term Development in Sport and Physical Activity framework as foundations for lifelong participation. The priorities reflected in this announcement align with that work: building a quality sport system that supports Canadians, including those new to Canada and new to sport, at every stage, from the playground to the podium.
This investment responds to priorities raised in the Future of Sport in Canada Commission’s Final Report and provides the sport sector with the resources to build on the work already underway in communities across Canada.
Sport for Life thanks Prime Minister Mark Carney, Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne, and Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden for their leadership and the investment in Canada’s sport system.
We look forward to working alongside Sport Canada, multisport service organizations, national sport organizations, provincial and territorial partners, and communities across the country to put this investment to work. It creates the opportunity to reach more kids, more families, and more communities through quality sport.
