Sport for Life Society Welcomes Terry Duguid as Canada’s New Minister of Sport
VICTORIA (January 7, 2025) — Sport for Life congratulates Terry Duguid on his appointment as Canada’s Minister of Sport and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada.
At Sport for Life, we believe in transforming communities through quality sport and physical literacy. Rooted in the Long-Term Development framework, quality sport—built on good people, programs, and places—provides pathways for participation at all levels, from grassroots to high performance. Physical literacy ensures that Canadians develop the skills, confidence, and motivation for lifelong participation in physical activity, promoting healthier, more active lives.
Minister Duguid’s extensive background in environmental policy and community development, combined with his lifelong enthusiasm for sports, positions him to champion sustainable and inclusive sport practices across Canada. Inspired by his father, Don Duguid, a two-time World Curling Champion, Minister Duguid grew up playing curling, football, hockey, and baseball, and recently helped establish cricket pitches in Winnipeg South. His commitment to fostering community sport aligns closely with Sport for Life’s vision for the future.
As we work to strengthen Canada’s sport and physical activity system, sustainable investment remains critical. By reinforcing National and Provincial Sport Organizations, supporting community sport clubs, and fostering partnerships between sport and education, we can ensure every Canadian has the opportunity to experience the benefits of sport and physical activity. Sport facilities and programs that integrate environmental responsibility and community access are essential to building a healthier, more active nation.
We acknowledge Minister Qualtrough’s transformative contributions to advancing a safer, more inclusive sport system in Canada. Her work has established important foundations for continued progress toward a system that values inclusion, collaboration, and excellence.
Sport for Life is committed to collaborating with Minister Duguid, the Government of Canada, and key stakeholders to drive system-wide initiatives that advance quality sport and physical literacy. Together with National and Provincial Sport Organizations, educators, and community leaders, we will build a sport system that empowers all Canadians to embrace physical activity as a pathway to better health, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future.
