Inclusive Physical Literacy Workshop in Winnipeg

Healthy relationships are critical to childhood development, but studies show that over half of children with disabilities have no close friends. That’s why Sport for Life has developed Physical Literacy 501, a workshop with a distinct focus on inclusion.

“We believe that every child should have the opportunity to play and make friends,” says Andrea Carey, Sport for Life’s Director of Special Projects.

“This workshop goes through the best ways to help make that happen.”

According to Stats Canada, one in five Canadians have a disability. Research shows that while children recognize the importance of movement at home, at school, and with friends, kids with disabilities are often excluded from opportunities that could help them develop physical literacy and social relationships. In Physical Literacy 501, participants will learn how to facilitate opportunities for kids of all abilities to play together.

The workshop will be offered at Sport for Life’s International Physical Literacy Conference from May 7 to 10 in Winnipeg. With a theme of “Moving Forward Together”, the event promises to bring representatives from many different sectors together to explore the leading edge of sport and movement science. The Physical Literacy 501 workshop will help participants learn about universally accessible programs and how to create them.

Workshop participants learn to develop adaptations of games and activities to allow for all abilities to participate and have a quality First Involvement experience.
